Statement and Call to Action

For any feedback, in particular suggestions for strengthening the proposals in this draft statement (e.g., how to more effectively advance an FCGH), or additional proposals, please email Elham Kateeb (elhame20@gmail.com) and Eric Friedman (eaf74@law.georgetown.edu).

We created a concise, action-oriented statement describing our proposals and who needs to do what to move them forward. We need your help to improve it and share it widely.

Human Rights and Equity

The right to health is already codified in numerous treaties, yet failures in implementation and accountability are ubiquitous, destroying lives and a fundamental obstacle to achieving SDG 3 and other Sustainable Development Goals. We will focus on an existing ambitious proposal aimed at right to health implementation and accountability, and at national and global health equity, the Framework Convention on Global Health (FCGH).

The FCGH would act through specific standards and mechanisms to advance key right to health principles from national to global level and across the determinants of health, while creating a regime of accountability. We will also explore other creative possibilities to advance the right to health in international law. Meanwhile, the United Nations has developed a draft treaty on the right to development. We will explore ways to incorporate sustainable health equity into that treaty, possibly through the UN Open Working Group on the right to development.
