The Holy Blue Breaks Free (video)
After days of tension and unlawful detainment by the Israeli navy, the Holy Blue—the first vessel of the Global Sumud Flotilla to win its freedom—rejoins the formation. Its sails catch the wind, a silent rebellion against a 19-year blockade. A fleeting victory for solidarity in a mission to deliver life-saving aid to Gaza.
The last few days of April have been a blur of tension and outrage. We were navigating in international waters near Crete, Greece, when the Israeli navy intercepted 22 vessels of our Global Sumud Flotilla. It was a brazen and unlawful act; they even jammed our communication channels, leaving us unable to call for help as they moved in to arbitrarily detain around 175 of our companions. My heart sinks when I think of them.
But today, a small piece of my hope was restored. We watched as the Holy Blue—the only vessel to be set free so far—finally rejoined our formation. Watching her sails catch the wind as she returned to the fight was a moment of profound emotion for all of us. It is a reminder that while the Israeli navy will go to any lengths to stop civilian boats carrying food, baby formula, and medical supplies, they cannot intercept the spirit of solidarity.
We are still here, and we are still sailing. We are messengers of peace in a region where peace is being systematically denied by a 19-year-long blockade. Our mission remains the same: to break this illegal blockade and ensure that humanitarian aid is allowed to reach those living in extreme deprivation.
